I pwn computers.

Tags: melodev

Just discovered why we go down every night around 10pm. That's when the db backups have been scheduled to run. I put in a ticket to move them to 3am, so hopefully they'll run faster and interrupt us less.

Win.

Are you excited about it being Friday? You know that means I start coding new shit tonight!

If you've got any requests for this weekend's work, get them in now. It'll take me a while to implement some of the awesome huge ideas you guys have already given me, so something short and sweet would be best.

My major focus this weekend will be finishing all of the elite account recalculation and reimport, actually starting the entries reimport (haven't started that yet because I wanted more time to keep an eye on it), and polishing up the elite sales & new user registration flows.

I know you need something "fun", so let me know what you're dying to have.

Also, radio show and State of the Website Address coming soon... stay tuned...

What's wrong with the My Melo page?

Tags: melodev

A lot of things have really come together since the 3.0 launch, and they're starting to feel more homey and more natural, but for some reason the My Melo page still doesn't feel right. I hardly ever click on it anymore, where in Melo 2.0 I clicked on it constantly.

What's wrong with me? What's wrong with the My Melo page? What do I need to change to make it useful again?

Someone tell me.

You're all perfect.

Tags: love

I love that the trend of "Wecome Tourists" posts started organically, out of the cleverness and awesomeness of the Melo members.

It was starting to bother me, as I was touring, that I couldn't just get a quick overview of what the person was all about, who they are, where they live, what they're into.

I mean, it's cool that it's all Meloish that way, you have to read some posts and browse some folders before you really "know" a person, but I was already starting to brainstorm some sort of "Bio" or "About Me" feature. And frankly, thinking about that feature made me feel kind of gross. It's not a very Meloey feature.

Enter, the "Welcome" posts. What a perfect solution! Now, if you want to share your overview, just post it in your public! (Tip: You can also just edit the description for you Public folder, which will leave your intro up at the top forever.)

You guys are awesome, and I love that you did this, and I love reading them, and I love you, and I am full of love, and this Nicotine lozenge is really delicious and giving me a loving, loving buzz.

Doing serious reimport, scripting, etc right now.

Site will probably get slow, and might go down.

Don't hate me for it. I'm just trying to make it faster & better, stronger & harder, overall.

Work it better!

I ran the elite import.

Tags: melodev

It wasn't as successful as I'd hoped. I am attempting to recalculate elite expirations as we speak, it is very very slow.

Technology hates me. But I will pwn it eventually.

Trippy

It always trips me out to see pictures of people I don't know with Melodramatic.com up on their computer monitors.

Like, I think this site only exists in my head, and realizing that it actually does go out into other people's homes and onto other people's computers, is really strange.

Why would anyone use this site?

Crazy people.

Random tour rules. Suck it.

Meeting a Horror Legend

Director of Psycho, no, not Hitchcock, the other Psycho. Tom Holland, and he totally wrote the screenplay for Cloak and Dagger which is one of my favorite movies ever.

He was cool, and creepy, and they have some really awesome ideas for horror content, and I love my job and the opportunities I have to meet people like that.

And now, lunch with The Black Keys, and a listening party for their new album. My job rules. Move to Hollywood and all this can be yours too. I promise it's easy!

I just finished the 100-tour.

And it was awesome.

I'll be running the elite updates tonight.

Tags: melodev

It's not 100% done, so I'm worried that it will fuck everything up, but it's already fucked up so it can't be worse than it is.

And if all else fails, I have the data in multiple formats, so I can always reorganize and normalize and reimport all over again.

I'll let you know when it's done.

Random Touring

Is so fun!

It really gives me an idea of how the community is doing, how the journals are shaping up, how people use the color tool, how people use the new features.

It's going to be so useful for me, I'm going to try and random tour at least once a day. Not finish a whole tour mind you -- only the first one is that easy -- but maybe over time I'll finish a few more.

Fun times. :)

Happy Melo Work Day

I've only been up for an hour and I'm pretty sure I've finished the work I needed to do for some people's half-missing posts. I'll roll that out today and it'll start batch re-importing your posts periodically.

At first, I'm only going to be processing users who have reported missing posts, and I'm logging everyone who's been processed. After all the complainers are out of the way, I'll just set it to "everyone" and it'll work on all our stuff over time.

I've got a few more fixes, features, and plans up my sleeve for today, so look out for some new shit tomorrow.

And as always, use the feedback button. The site has gotten too big for me to keep a handle on all the different pages and problems, so I'm really relying on you guys to keep me informed.

Much Love!

Buy me This.

No seriously, I want all 17 in this list.

Okay I fixed the Active Users list

Try again.

Any feedback on the new Active Users list?

Tags: melodev

If you haven't seen it, click on "Active Users" at the top of the page, next to your Karma & Touches.

This is what I envisioned the new actusers list looking like, although it's currently unavailable to anonymous members. Over time I might move more towards this strategy, open it up to everyone, and kill that "who's online" box over on the right.

Feedback greatly appreciated.

Snow Crash Rules

I'm going to be a hacker when I grow up.

And my cat has officially changed his last name to Protagonist.

I've spent most of my 30s listening to "Diamond Age".

Tags: nerd

And I just posted a bunch of posts in a row like a spammer.

Diamond Age is growing on me. It's pretty awesome that nanotech already exists and everyone just describes themself as a "nanotech engineer".

Not to mention how much I always adore a strong female protagonist.

Could be my new favorite book. Snow Crash is next. Nerdtothemax.

Quick question.
How come anonymous people keep looking at my page?
I have it set to logged in users only.
what's the deal?

Re: public

Thanks for releasing my account. I've avoided this site long enough to "grow up" or to grow out of a funk or something, anyhoo, I just wanted to say I love the changes. It seems to run rock-solid after my tinkering with the ancient exploits of yesteryear. :) Not to indirectly insult you, but Melo feels like a 'real social networking site' now, not just a project of a script kiddy. :-p In any case, I'm impressed. Keep it up. :)

Re: public

This is Oona, and I was just cleaning up this melo, and there is something funny about the Friend folder. There is no profile photo in it, but it has 2 gspot input boxes. I just wondered why. I don't need it fixed, but it is just odd so I mention it as feedback.

Re: What's wrong with the My Melo page?

in mobile, for touches and bangs (to avoid the multiclicking phenomenon) maybe have the link take you to a simple page with a "How many Touches/Bangs would you like to give this Post/Picture/Other?"

Re: What's wrong with the My Melo page?

think about Trending too, melo wide.

Re: What's wrong with the My Melo page?

Last one, promise (for now)... TOURS!

The Random Tour is the coolest feature I've seen on melo since I started in 2003. The Karma incentives are just right enough to get people to waste hours of endless melo surfing reading through people's shit they may not have read otherwise.

I haven't played much with the picture uploading function (probably one of the things I most missed about Melo 1.0). I'm not sure if it's an elite-only function or not, but if people are uploading photos, maybe you can create a Photo Tour? Get more traffic into the photo real. Add a voting function to the photo's for interaction, Karma incentives, etc.

I've noticed over the years, that there are lots of people with Polls that never get much exposure. You surf to a newbie's Melo and there are maybe 4 votes on their obscure "Edward or Jacob" type polls. Maybe a Poll Tour would be awesome to get some traffic to people's polls, generate more visibility... With polls too, you wouldn't have to work in a 25 second delay before hitting Next. If they don't vote, they can't move on. :)

From what I hear, Twitter API is widely used throughout the intarwebz to integrate live updates. Maybe linking a melo to a twitter account and having a spot in the profile or a new box for twitter updates would be fun. Maybe even give Karma incentives to #Melo in their tweets?

Finally, a new feature I was thinking about the other day... being the former WoW dork that I was, a Melo Daily. Since Melo thrives on posts and content and getting people to read, comment, and debate, etc... maybe have a daily topic or weekly topic for people to post about, like an essay prompt. Post it, tag something specific to put it in the daily/weekly pool, and add extra incentives to encourage people to write posts relating to the Daily/Weekly topic, they have to "Daily Topic Tour" at least 10-100 other posts in the Daily/Weekly pool in order to get the incentive. Generate some community discussion. You can give monthly leaderboard incentives such as Daily Discussion Member of the Month, can't win more than once every 3 months (to spread the wealth)... I dunno. But it would give people a reason to come and interact every day/week, maybe hook people into some heated debates, get emotions running, generate hype, probably identify some new Melo celebs & greifers!!! Cuz we know how much melo loves her drama!

:D

If you couldn't tell, I've had a hardon for melo for 7 years. Facebook can't boast membership of 8+ years, a core of dedicated community members, or member driven workflow for bugs/fixes/enhancements.

Pay no mind to the woman behind the curtain.

Re: What's wrong with the My Melo page?

Let me start with, I don't have the first incling about real-time. I can think, but I think it's more of a technical solution you're looking for. Currently, we have to hit refresh in the browser to get new shit to show. Facebook and Twitter seem to do it live with the little "There have been 12 posts since you last refreshed" function. Might be worth looking at something similar to make it MOAR live for Melo. To be honest, I think Melo is fine. There's already enough content to keep us occupied that live streaming isn't absolutely necessary.

Mobile melo: Treat it as if you're building a completely different website. Separate CSS, separate everything. I don't know if you use database to manage content or not, but if you do, then you can tap into the same data when populating the Mobile Melo site. When you update, it updates your DB and it'll show in the full melo when you refresh. Possibly a temporary solution while you come up with something innovative and cooler. Keeping mobile melo and full melo separate makes it so that the browser knows which CSS it's supposed to use. Don't link anything in Mobile to Full Melo and it should flow properly. I don't know, again, I'm an analyst not a programmer.

mikehawk002's picture
Re: What's wrong with the My Melo page?

Don't get me wrong, I know a little about web dev, but not anything spectacular. I'm an idea guy, and a network analyst at Novell for anti-piracy shit. Not much programming background...

As far as mobile, don't think of it as "integration", treat it as a different site with a dedicated CSS for smaller mobile screens, more in another post. You can't focus on building an app because you'd have to build a different app for every platform API (android, crackberry, iPhone, etc).

Build a simple home page (eg. mobile.melo.com) with a stylesheet meant to function on smaller mobile screens. Keep the content minimal.

To brainstorm mobile is to ask yourself what are we gonna use it for. Posting on the fly, Reading people's content, gspots, spreading karma (bang/touch). Keep the mobile function limited to just the core things until you're ready to build it more robust-like with fanciness.

In all, I forsee the following pages needing to be set:

Home Page: with Melo Logo, Simple Nav Bar, Jump to User, and either Recent Post stream or Melo MoTD. I'd avoid adding stats to the page just because the back-end "thinking" might bog down load time.

My Melo: Very simple 'Friend/Tab stream' and Profile Edit links (with an Editing subpage).

Sites: I'd limit it to one or two posts per page with a 'Next/Previous' linking mechanism to keep the loads small. I'd probably disable custom CSS for mobile just to keep it from messing up the mobile browsers. Gspots would be on a separate page if someone decided they wanted to read them, load time issues. I would maybe add a 50x50px version of the prof pic (or maybe thumbnail would be easier) to keep it personalized a little. At the bottom of each post, 3 links (Touch, Bang, Gspot).

Post Page: To post a 'Quick Post', WYSIWYG, no html. Text editor with submit or cancel links/buttons.

Gspot Page: gspots (public is really all that is necessary) as they appear today on the Public folder. Box at the top to submit a gspot, stream the rest below it, simple... with or without thumbnail pic. disabled HTML for sanity purposes. Maybe limit it to the most recent 10-20 gspots?

I'm sure there are other pages that could be interesting/necessary. I have a bunch in my head, but I've already typed a lot.

The coolest part about Mobil is how you can hook someone into using it continuously. I think that is where tours comes in (I'll post separately about this). Tell me what you think! :D If you wanna talk more and less publicly, I'm Myles Anderson on FB and you're already my friend so send me a message.

i would never have an about me section. i don't want to be a packaged product with features and accessories. people can know me or not, hate me for the most part, and ignore me the rest.

I do not make many new friends on melo. it probably takes too long to get to know me.

that is good, it weeds out the idiots.

I had the pictures, up until I moved into the Speakeasy. Since I moved out, I haven't been able to re-find them. They are somewhere, probably in some unlabeled box I left behind. We should task Brandillio to find them.

All I know is it's two harddrives packed in a purple Crown Royale velvet bag. I carried them with me to 5 different apartments, eventually planning to restore them. It's like a buried treasure.

Re: What's wrong with the My Melo page?

Also some excellent ideas!!! I love it all. There is soooo much push towards "real time web" right now, everyone is gaga over the idea, and I've been racking my brain for how to get there early before the other monster sites catch up. I love that you already consider Melo to be real time, that means I don't have very far to go to maximize that functionality.

And in terms of mobile integration -- I fucking want it so bad, and I want it to be original and awesome. Twitter was fucking pimp when it started when all you had to do was txt a certain number. Also I used to love College Club that gave all the members their own voicemail box. Maybe we can brainstorm some highly functional super awesome original use of the phone on Melo. Stew on that and let me know. :)

mikehawk002's picture
Re: What's wrong with the My Melo page?

The only unoriginal idea for improving melo, would be a status update function with possible mobile capacity if you're on the road. I also really liked Myspace's "What are you listening to right now/reading right now/watching right now?" function.

Grow the social, live stream portion of melo. Real Time updates. Maybe even Geotagging (apparently it's the hot ticket in social media).

mikehawk002's picture
Re: What's wrong with the My Melo page?

Don't get hung up on features on facebook or myspace or anything else. We don't want Melo to be polluted with unoriginal ideas.

Melo is, and forever will be, unique and 100% built by you and the community. I think Melo has an awesome niche. It's like a social-networking blog site with live data-streaming. Places like Facebook and Myspace have blog functionality, but they're hidden away. Myspace is nothing but static profile and back-end private data stream. Facebook and Twitter have the public data stream "micro blog" thing going. Blog sites like Wordpress or Blogger are strictly blog with minimal community and social-networking functionality... Hell, even old school LiveJournal pales in comparisson to the multifunction of Melo.

Melo is sorta data-stream, privately, via My Melo. Overkill on the data stream isn't necessary. That's what facebook is for... or Twitter. There is a public timeline, polls, stats, etc on the Melo Home Page, like Twitter's. There is a static profile, similar to Myspace, but not bogged down with too much profile real estate. You can blog... or post, or micro-blog, whatever suits your orgasm. You can post pictures, you're not bound to the style and can adjust the colors/css. You can create folders, themes, almost like your own personal website. Melo is perfection; the perfect blend of ideas and functionality that you'd normally have to sign up for 6 different websites to enjoy separately.

Melo is the end-all. It emphasizes the best qualities those other sites have, but effortlessly and in synergy with eachother. And the coolest part, you did it on your own with no outside influence.

:)
