Updates so far
Update:
* Elite subscriptions are good for new members moving forward, still need to clean up old members.
* Uneditable posts should be fixed across the board. If you are still having troubles with this please submit it into feedback.
* Failing cron has been fixed for daily stats, touches, and FP rotation. Still working on karma and logs.
* Haven't gotten to half-missing posts yet but I have a fix I'm 75% done with so hopefully today I'll get that ball rolling.
* Lots of style fixes, and a new folder block on the entries page.
All in all a pretty productive weekend.

Accidentally Reset Formats on Recent Posts
Sorry about that. Will have to fix them manually. :)

Technical Note About Input Format Changes
Here's what's going to happen tonight.
1. I am making a new Input Format to appear in "Format it For Me" called "Melo2 HTML".
2. Any posts that were created before 3.0 will have their input format changed to Melo2 HTML. This includes blogs, favorites, clique posts, and front page articles.
3. Any users created before 3.0 will be granted access to this new input format, anyone after will not.
4. The new input format will not appear as an option unless the post is already set to Melo 2 HTML, so you will not be able to use it on new posts.
5. If you change the input format on an old post, you will no longer be able to change it back to the Melo2 HTML format.
6. The Melo2 HTML format will be much more lenient than any of our new input formats. Therefore any users caught abusing the Melo2 HTML format will simply have their access to it removed, which could cause you to be unable to edit your posts for a while.
7. Abuse means malicious javascript or other codes that can cause harm to users. It does not mean layout codes.
8. Since this is a new format, once it is live I might need to tweak its settings a bit before our old posts look normal again.
If you have any questions please let me know. This should solve once and for all the problem with people being unable to edit their posts and clique posts not showing their pictures and other things appropriately.

Let's do this shit.
It's Friday night, the beginning of my weekend. I've got a glass of French Pinot Noir, my boyfriend is in the kitchen making fried rice, and I'm ready to get the ball rolling.
Melo 3.0.1 here we come. :)

Things I've Fixed in my Head
With most technology problems and bug fixes, only 50% of the work happens when you're sitting in front of a computer. The rest of it happens when you're driving, showering, falling asleep, watching TV, and these moments of brilliance and "AHA!"s strike you when you least expect it.
Problems for which I have solutions already planned in my head and therefore should be able to bust out this weekend pretty quickly include:
- Elite subscription payments -- changing to a different Paypal module that support subscriptions more robustly.
- Uneditable posts for users with low karma -- giving everyone from Melo 2.0 a special role that lets them bypass karma control for input formats.
- Half-missing posts for some users -- You copied and pasted out of Microsoft Word and those fake characters were unloved during import. I will need to do a bulk re-import of any entries that had MS characters in it.
- Failing cron -- DUH, I should only calculate karma nightly for users that logged in that day. All users can get cronned weekly in a slower rotation.
Maybe if I'm lucky I'll have all of these done tonight.
Also, by hook or by crook, I am doing a radio show this Sunday. I will post details as soon as I know where I'm hosting it.
Thanks for sticking with it, love you guys more than you know!

We survived our first month's payment.
I had to transfer money in at the last second, didn't think I'd make it, there's only $2.52 left in the account after the deduction, but we're saved....
Now to make enough money so we can pay next month's hosting bill! Woo hoo!
- Touch (62)
- Bang (31)
I figured out why some of you can't edit your entries.
It's because to be nice I imported your shit with the "Full HTML" format, so that your old HTML would still work. However in 3.0 "Full HTML" is a Karma reward, and if you don't have access to that input format, you can't edit the posts associated with it.
It's kind of a cool bug, and now that I know what's going on it should be easy to fix. Sorry to those of you who were affected by it, I'll be fixing you up shortly!

More of Sara's Bullshit Complaining
What makes people think they know anything about web development?
I keep seeing people say "we didn't need a new version, Melo 2.0 was fine, she just changed it because ________."
Really? How do you know that? How do you know what technology Melo needs to stay alive? How do you know what my motivations were?
Do you honestly think that I would sign up to rewrite this site from scratch because I WANTED TO? Do you think I get any benefit out of it whatsoever? Do you think it was fucking fun for me?
Nobody in their right mind would sign up to rebuild this site. Travis told me to outsource it to India. Other people told me to just shut it down, or let it live on how it was forever until it fizzled out.
Nobody who knows anything about development has questioned my decision to move to a framework, instead of a pile of custom code from 2001.
Only stupid, stupid people, with no experience or knowledge, are making wild accusations with no basis in reality. And I could just write them off as stupid, except that they INFLUENCE OTHER PEOPLE. They convince other, more impressionable and naive members, that their bullshit take on truth is actually correct. That they know something about what this site did or did not need.
You don't know. You don't have my skills. You don't work my jobs. You have never run a website with registered members. You have never had to support a 9GB text-only database. So until you do that, please refrain from telling me what this site did and did not need in order to survive.
It was 100% impossible for me to protect you from hackers on Melo 2.0. Do you remember that, goldfish memory assholes? Do you remember all the javascript injection that allowed people to steal your passwords?
It would have taken me 2 years to upgrade Melo 2.0 so that it was protected from hackers. When it was written, SQL injection wasn't so well known, and so only 50% of the code was protected from intrusions.
I had to make the call. That's my fucking job. That is why this is my website and not your website -- because when it comes time to make the tough calls I am not afraid to do it, and to follow up on it, and to make sure it works.
All of this roller coaster of feedback is really reminding me of the one thing I've always known -- I have to pick whether I am the face, or the body. If I am building this with my blood, sweat, and tears, then I cannot be responsible to justify it to you though these social interactions, because frankly it just breaks my heart.
Here's hoping I can numb myself and code like a zombie.
PS -- Look forward to less filtration on my bubbling rage and anger over the next couple of months. I am working on quitting smoking and so I am becoming a raging bitch. It will be harder to let your snide fucking comments roll like water off a duck's back. Someday I will be perfect.

Dear Admins
Since I don't have a direct communication channel setup with you yet -- no email lists or "admin news" section -- I will let you know here that I have released a new admin feature called "Rebuild User Access". It is located right next to Add Friend, and will allow you to rebuild access for a single user.
If anyone complains that they can't edit posts, their entries are not being protected, or anything else of their nature, go ahead and Rebuild their Access.
This does *not* apply to seeing "anonymous" in the logs, as I do not believe that is a real access log, and is instead the result of us doing work on our own content. I will let you know when I discover more about that issue.

The Beginning of Melo Democracy
As I am going through the Feedback and checking them off, some of the requests and reports will need to be deferred in favor of critical fixes. Of the non-critical fixes, you guys now have the ability to vote on what I'm going to work on next.
Simply visit the Tickets section at Community => Dev Center => Support Tickets to see what's been added to the queue. Touch any of the tickets that you really want to see done. I will fix whatever is at the top of the list and work my way down.
Important things like elite accounts, crashing, missing data, slowness, etc, will be taken care of immediately. All other issues will get handled in order of mob-rule.
Enjoy.

I killed Melo.
With all my access rebuilding.
No more of that! I will also need to restart MySQL again tonight with slightly more conservative memory allocations.
The good news is, I fixed gspot reply notifications during the downtime. Woo hoo!

And now we have CAPTCHAs.
Bots be damned. You can see our CAPTCHA in action on the contact & registration forms. Very cool.
I am looking into an Audio CAPTCHA so we can be friendly to the blind. That's coming shortly.

Coming together coming together...
Slowly but surely.
So much more to do, I'm still not posting comfortably yet, but we're on our way.
Keep up the good feedback guys, I'm furiously checking things off. I wish I had a feature so I could submit a reply to your feedback as I check it off -- I'll write that soon. But for now, just know that I am receiving it. :)

Melo: Tips and Tricks
- Is your journal entry or folder linking to something like "node/34535" instead of a pretty URL? If you edit that entry and then resave it, the path will get generated correctly! Meanwhile posts without URLs are quietly getting cleaned up 50 at a time in the background, so eventually they will all be pretty again. Note: This does not apply to where you land after a gspot reply -- that is just natural Drupal behavior I need to override.
- Is your user URL linking to something weird, like /users/sara24352? Try editing your account -- the page where you set your password, and saving it again. Maybe that will fix you. If not, report it in feedback and I will script a cleanup sooner or later. :)
- Wondering why your clique isn't showing on the front page? It is currently sorted in order of Clique-Last-Updated, meaning the picture/description/etc for the Clique. I have a fix I'm working on so new Clique Posts will update that timestamp and resolve the staleness of the clique block on the front page.
- Had trouble with your color scheme header or profile picture? Try again, I just updated some file permissions.
- Want to quickly recalculate your karma? Visit your karma page to get a refresh. Karma gets calculated in batches at regular times, Touches get reset nightly.
- Wondering what's up with gspot replies? So am I! The gspot replies page is cached and should refresh when you get a new reply, and you should also get a special gspot notification when you get a new reply. Currently both features are sucking, and I will fix shortly. In the meantime, I'm disabling cache, so the page will load slow but will show the most recent replies.
- Got other questions? Ask on this post and I shall answer.

Fix to Color Scheme Headers
Any color schemes you've already created, you will need to edit and resave.
Any new color schemes moving forward should work fine.

Elite Logs
They are *working*, however they get generated every 5 minutes on a scrip that runs called "cron", and I have been fighting since launch to get cron not to fail.
It works most of the time but it's failing on something and as soon as I figure that out our logs will be up-to-the-5-minutes accurate. I might be able to get it down to 1 minute if all goes well.
I haven't included IP addresses yet, that was special Melo 2.0 functionality that I'm going to have to rewrite in 3.0.
And as for anonymous logs, I am not sure if that gets logged when they just *attempt* to visit your post, or if they actually do. I tested all of my accounts and my FO entries are *not* exposed to public users, and the same for my "only allow logged in users to visit my page".
If you can verify that any of your protected content is actually not protected please let me know ASAP. If I have one example of a failure I can reproduce it and fix it everywhere else it might be happening.
Thanks for everything!

Good morning everyone.
I am very curious as to why the icons keep disappearing from the menu in My Melo. Happening to anyone else? Maybe the Melo gods really don't want us to have cute icons...
I am happy to see some success with the elite accounts and karma changes. I will be slaving again all day to fix the remaining show stopping issues we've got, but this is my last day.
Tomorrow is a day of rest, and Monday I go back to work, so from here on out we're on a normal Melo Dev schedule.
Love you guys, thanks for going on this journey with me.

Rebuilding Access Yet Again

i squash you bugs!
i spent all day today and yesterday forcing myself to suffer through the shitty shit shit work of cleaning up all the missing data and shit.
now i'm going to relax on the couch, watch the new stark trek, drink tequila, and work on FUN melo stuff.
so if you have any small, quick, and relatively fun melo things in mind that you want me to work on, leave me a gspot.
i'll be processing feedback as well so don't forget to use that!

Awwww :( icky! x
had mine taken off when i was in high school. it never grew back. the color sorta came back a little, but the worst part is HAIR! Good part is I'm male, so it grows out with my facial hair and I just shave it all off at once; blends nicely. :D
Hey thanks for the insights. I was kind of hoping it would grow back smaller, I liked it but it just got too big and stuck out too far. I definitely won't want it if it grows back oddly shaped though. :)
goddess, i have a question.
an entry is missing in my fiction_fantasy folder, dated 3/30/08. it's incomplete. normally, i have everything backed up somewhere, but this one entry i have NOTHING on, and now that i finally has the gusto to finish this series... i need to know where i left off. any chance you could try to save it? if not, that's alright, i kind of remember what i wrote, but it's hard to say exactly what it was almost 2 years ago. (hugs)
You know, this really is the most entertaining thing I've read online so far this year..
I just used mine to break up the seeds out of my new sack, and then I filled it out because no one else would :(
it is a fact that all girls look better with glasses than contacts. gosh my gf in glasses makes me swoon.
By the way, if you don't fill it out and mail it back we will send someone to your door up to 6 times to complete it with you :)
Thanks, that post really cheered me up after a terrible evening.
i can sort-of imagine what rotting bacon smells like, but im sure its actually a million times worst than what im imagining.
I have had 11 moles removed from various areas of my body over the past 6 years. The scars tend to not be too bad once they have healed.
I had one removed from my chest that turned bright purple. That was particularly attractive when I wore anything slightly revealing. Low and behold they can give you a steroid shot when this happens and it turns it back to skin color. YAY!
I also have had moles removed that had birthmark characteristics and the mole returned within a years time. When it came back though it was no longer a circle but a rather odd shape.
The good thing is you didn't get stitches. The ones that are removed and require stitches do not leave good scars.
Hope that the mole was completely fine and you heal quickly
Just wanted to say I thank you for being the creater of an amazing outlet!! You rock.
hi sara,
i know i mentioned this before, during the crossover, but is there some way to reimport my old gspots? it seems they got lost when melo 3.0 started... it's not a big deal, i just figured i'd asked, ya know, for the karma.
mkay... thanks love! and thank you for being the creator of melo.
i love the emo glasses too! the hole looks like a giant missing pimple of emptiness... like it will take you inside the void of your brain.
some of us get to wear emo glasses everyday. but its to the point that im starting to think i look better in glasses than with my contacts in.
I hate to bring bad news.. but knowing the nasty html that you had removed from prettieinpunk's melo happened..
i have HTML DISABLED on my guest book for good reason, and today THEIR ARE HTML COMMENTS!!!!! Its a cute comment, so thats not a problem, but the fact is that i have a disabled feature and - that apparently means nothing?? hopefully you can fix that
that's a nice eyebrow he's got there.
scary part of that comment was its sincerity.
More lols.
FUCK their requirement bullshit. I'd rebel the same fuckin way.
Great dialogue. You made your story points briefly and with flair. Maybe throw in an additional adjective or adverb and it's top quality.
See "The Blond and the Doormouse" in my NEW Epic Tales folder! (gleem)
Hahah lemme know when you bust one out, I want to ride the intoxicating wave of moderately important experiences.
Lol. Oh, it's not fun, it's a headache.
Trust.
My posts tend to drag on randomly. I'm gonna follow suit and dedicate single posts to epic tales of moderate to low importance. :P
Hahah thanks, I used to love to write epic accounts of mundane experiences in my life on Melo. I'm trying to get back to my roots. :)
Hey that's what I thought, if there's spacing in between them it's implied that it's an alternating conversation and you don't have to say "he said" "she said" every time. But at the same time I only did that on the very last line, probably precisely because I wasn't comfortable having ambiguity in the middle. I bet the science of writing is pretty fun to learn. :)

The angle of your face is only sligggghtly off.
Or maybe you're just further from the camera, hmm.
