There are states trying to EXPAND the penalty?! Which? I hadn't heard, but this saddens me to no end. We're the only country still head-over-heels for capital punishment. :(
Wow, Harold and Maude. I haven't seen that in years. It didn't make me cry. Mostly confused me (as I saw it when I was a teenager, with the typical teenage attitude).
i have always been a fan of escalating fights and how they progress to new levels of power, but this is just burdensome to me. I agree with you for the post part, however for different reasons. :-p
It's insane. I'm equally frightened and dismissive of the GOP right now. Generally speaking, I don't choose political sides - independent all the way (though I will admit I am rooting for Obama for reasons entirely unrelated to his political philosophy). But I don't see anything that can be even loosely be called true conservatism coming from any Republicans these days. They've become entire reactionary creatures, and any views spoken from within the party right now is completely devoid of nuanced interpretational politics. That is to say, the GOP hardly takes the initiative on anything anymore unless it's to take initiative to take an initiative, namely, the initiative to complain when something screws up their plan for America. They're on the ball only when it comes to condemning and destroying every piece of legislative change that has been suggested these last few months simply because they've been partially authored by Obama.
The amuse me because they're all such clowns. Even the powerful ones, people like Rush Limbaugh, seem to be such incredibly unflattering caricature of themselves. I mean, how can you not laugh at the man while he's on air, going to town on liberalism. Really, it's a loud, offensives guy with an interest in politics battling changes in blood pressure as his rants get louder. He's like a gorilla in a cage, as are most of my Fox News enemies. :P
But the part that scares me most about the GOP right now is that, though it looks to appear addled from the inside, that attitude is spreading. You've seen it yourself, dumb Americans falling into the Teabagger movement and all manner of completely illogical positions. This is plague of stupidity, and I don't know when it will end. I keep thinking, "Ooh, oooh, Palin's gonna say something stupid again and make them look like idiots, and finally people will wisen up!" But she says something stupid, horribly, tremendously stupid... and the GOP and her constituents all cheer for her and beat their chests. If she is ever elected in 21012, my friends and I have a plan to keep it from coming to fruition.
Haha, did you see any of Steele's interviews from the RNC in Hawaii? They covered a bit of it in the Daily Show, but you didn't even need Jon Stewart to see the addled irony in Steele and the gang saying that Obama is completely out of touch with the average American. They were saying all this with leis around their necks, sitting poolside or in otherwise beautiful island environs. Hilarity. They really are retards (and if you haven't seen the ruckus Sarah Palin recently made over the word retard, you'll find it all the more hilarious).
Regarding Buddhist texts, the tattoo was at least partly a permanent reminder to me to turn to the suttas not just when in crisis, but when in peace as well. :)
Ridiculous. He totally talks out of his ass, I think in an attempt to link his thinking patterns to most GOP constituents. It really, really backfires on the poor guy.
Actually, I found the article on an independent news site (and saw it reposted throughout the liberal, conservative, and independent blogosphere). In order to insert a bit of irony into the situation, I checked to see if Fox News was also running it. They were. I figured I'd cite their article because of the beautiful craziness of it all. :P
It feels like the end, I know. But now is the time for those of us without strong party loyalties to start making serious noise. Not letters to the editor like we've been doing, but loud, dangerous noise.
That's all the Republican teabaggers have been doing for the past year, and look at what they've accomplished. Fight fire with fire, I say.

I'm hoping the expansion of national education standards (Arne Duncan, the new Secretary of Education, seems like an old-schooler who believes that kids won't get anywhere if they aren't challenged) will do something to combat stupidity like this. But time will only tell. Oy.
